PROCEDURES
Putting It All Together

After knowing the problems encountered that result in loss of optical signal
and damaged connectors and fibers, and finding the materials and methods
to correct the problems, you can put all of this information together to
create a cleaning procedure that will work for your application.

Use these steps to write a procedure that will work and, if followed, will
yield repeatable EXCELLENT results.

Step 1: Define your materials and tools. Use only the highest quality
materials to reduce or eliminate any chances of inadequate cleaning or new
contamination from inferior products. Make sure your tools are clean and in
working order.

Step 2: Have all the materials and tools available for the procedure to work.
If you are missing anything, your procedure will fail. Always have a good
supply of consummables on hand - never risk running out. Don't forget
fresh batteries for scopes.

Step 3: Write your procedure to follow the proper use and safety of the
materials.

When using wipes, a) wipe in one direction only, using a slight turning or
twist of the connector endface, b) do not reuse wipes or you take the risk of
poor cleaning, added contamination, and damage, c) use only anhydrous
(99%) alcohol for fastest drying time and no spotting.

When using swabs, use the proper size for the connector or adapter and
follow the same procedures as with wipes: single use, single direction
motion with half twist (straight pull out), anhydrous alcohol.

Step 4: Dry. Use filtered air immediately after a wet clean. A clean, dry
wipe is an alternative.

Step 5: Replace connector in its operating position or protect immediately
after cleaning. Only replace connectors when its mate and adapter have
been cleaned.

Following these five steps with the knowledge of your materials and tools,
you will be able to develop a cleaning procedure that will ensure repeatable
positive results.
